Where People Learn a Living
The passing of our beloved Rev. Richard Schuster is a loss shared by our entire community.
The Richard L. Schuster Memorial Fund has been established by St. Luke’s LifeWorks to honor the agency’s founding Executive Director, Dick Schuster, who for 22 years served as the visionary leader of the organization. Gifts made in memory and honor of Dick will be used at the discretion of SLLW’s Board of Directors, for special projects and expenditures related to the accomplishment of those projects and initiatives Dick so strongly believe in and valued. St. Luke’s LifeWorks is a non-profit organization providing learning opportunities, housing and support services to people overcoming homelessness in lower Fairfield County.
"It is estimated that over 4,000 people experience homelessness everyday in Connecticut. Every night, 2,000 people, including 400 children spend the night in emergency housing."
- CT Commission to End Homelessness.
According to the Partnership for Strong Communities, people experience homelessness due to:
- Low income – unemployed or underemployed, working low wage jobs
- High housing costs consume too much of the family/individual income
- Unexpected event triggers a downward spiral – loss of a job, injury or illness, divorce, loss of a spouse, costly car breakdown
In addition, serious life issues can lead to long-term homelessness:


Physical disability or illness such as HIV/AIDS

Services are available at 10 locations, eight of which are in Stamford, for families, single adults, people living with HIV/AIDS and people recovering from mental illness.
